January 22, 2001 - Backwards hats are backward!

Ok, it was cool once, it was different to see tennis players being hip, but it's now played out, if you must wear a hat, do so for the right reason and enjoy its benefits.

They include:
1) Keeping the sun away from your eyes
2) Keeping the sun away from your head (the summer sun can be dangerous)
3) Keeping the sun away from your face
3) Keeping your head warm, if it's cold out
4) Keeping perspiration away from your eyes

But if you wear your hat backwards most of the protection will not be present.

The first pro tennis player that I remember wearing his hat backwards was Marc-Kevin Goellner, he had teenage girls screaming, his game was on the rise, and everyone thought he was the next big thing, but unfortunately his game went in the same direction as his hat - backward!

Jim Courier made it practical to wear a hat on court, he took full advantage of its benefits, if you can't wear it right don wear it at all.

January 23, 2001 - Anna Loses again!

In an age where winning is the only think that matters, some very successful athletes are criticized for not winning enough titles, while others are cast aside for now winning major championships, why is it ok for Anna, the glamour girl of the sport of tennis to not only be without a major title, but without any titles period?

Is she a good player, yes, is she a great player, no, greatness is reserved for champions and so far, she is not held up a trophy over her head.

A few weeks back I was engaged in a debate with a major Anna fan, click here for the transcript.

Very few lady athletes can carry the glamour flag and still be considered champions, the one person that comes to mind is Gabriella Sabatini, and some may say she fell very short of her talents, capturing that lone US Open title.

When it is all said and done, Anna will be extremely lucky to equal Gabby's regular tour wins and Open trophy.

January 24, 2001 - How Far Will They Go?

Women are the most beautiful of all creations, they are appealing from head to toe and have have what men want - but Athletic women tend to break away from the mold.

Ladies on the sporting field no matter what game they are playing, tend to lose their femininity, their size, look and clothing diminish their sex appeal. Women basketball players are the prime example, not to forget softball ladies.

But there's one sport, the most popular and financially lucrative women's game on the planet, where the ladies thrive on their sex appeal, they were outfits that accentuate their form. The hairdo, nails, jewelry makeup, is straight from the pages of Elle magazine,  the strut, the attitude, the look belongs on the cat walk.

And if you're thinking that they can't play, they won't get down and dirty and dive for balls and give it a 1000 percent, you're wrong, the ladies of tennis give it all they have in the pursuit of the championship trophies and millions of dollars in prize money and endorsements. They are simply one of the best forms of entertainment available.

Lately, especially at this year's Australian Open, it's been a "let's see if you can outdo this" atmosphere, the clothes are getting more revealing, bellies, cleavage, butt, legs, hair, bright colors, fancy shoes, not to mention large entourages.

Should they tone it down, NO! how far will they go? Anything short of naked is fine with me, the sexist pig says.

January 25, 2001 - Patrick McEnroe - a nice guy, but still a puppet!

His brother is controversial, outspoken and unwilling to play by the existing rules.

He demanded that the USTA and ITF change some of the rules regarding the Davis Cup, without the desire to fix a broken horse the powers that be decided instead to accept Johnnie Mac's resignation and replace him with someone who will not rock the boat and follow the rules.

That person, Patrick McEnroe, he's not a reformer, he's not demanding, he simply will go with the flow and be like every other captain prior to John, show up and hope the best players commit to playing, if they don't, go with what you have and hope for the best.

Don't look for anything revolutionary from P-Mac, under his captainship, Davis Cup tennis will remain what it currently is, a non-recognizable event outside of the tennis world and with minute importance among regular fans of the game.
